Robbie Bolger 800hp Drift Monaro
Robbie Bolger runs an Xtreme Race clutch in his 800hp Monaro. It's a triple plate carbon setup built to perform - and perform he is, with a Round 2 win @ the Drift Australia series and plenty of star appearances at the V8 Supercar Championship rounds.
Round 1
Daredevil drifter Robbie Bolger won’t let his self-described “worst-round ever” of the Toyo Drift Australia Series disturb his focus towards Mallala’s second round this weekend. Behind the wheel of world drifting’s most powerful car – his custom 7-litre, 800hp Holden Monaro – the world-record holding stunt rider struggled during Perth’s opening round in February when he failed to adapt to a sandy surface.
“Round one was really quite bad for us, the Barbagallo track was sandy causing the car to under-steer– something it has never done before but that’s certainly no excuse,” said Bolger. “Coming from that, I am really looking forward to getting out there and putting everything into this weekend. “Mallala is the track at which the Monaro debuted two years ago with Jeremy Lake in the driver’s seat so it will be good to get back there.”
At 7-litres, the Monaro is more powerful than a V8 Supercar (which is limited to a 5-litre capacity) and Bolger believes it’s also the best-prepared of the category. “The car is fantastic and always ready to go – it’s basically a V8 Supercar with more horsepower and grunt, and I’m really confident of doing the job at Mallala,” added Bolger. “When I first brought an Australian car into the series people didn’t think it would go well, but just because the category originated in Japan doesn’t mean all the cars have to come from there. “We were also the first factory-backed drift team and placed 3rd overall in the series last year, so I think the car has more than proved its worth.”
Despite Bolger’s displeasure with round one, Barbagello resulted in a respectable 15th placing which will see him head into the Mallala round with a personal tally of 321 points.
Round 2
For the 2007 Round 2 @ Mallala, Robbie Bolger (Xtreme Clutch / CAPA Holden Monaro) took a round win and just missing out on the title.
"The V8s have been going great guns," Bolger, who is aiming to debut a VE Commodore in round three, said. "We've had a couple of wins and almost won the championship last year which exceeded a lot of expectations. The Nissan teams are running scared and we'll only get better from here."
A new trend has emerged in the V8 invasion in 2007, with a number of cars combining the grunt of a V8 engine with a Japanese chassis.
South Australia's "Turbo" Tom Monkhouse AKA "Deltus Mc Twit" switched from his rear-wheel drive Mitsubishi EVO to a Nissan 180SX for the 2007 Drift Australia Series. A turbo-charger failure took him out of action early at the 2nd round. He is currently in 15th position behind fellow Wheelworx team-mate Linden Reynolds.
